Meet the Team
Structured Carbon is a specialist partnership built entirely around RAAC. We are the first company to commercially produce a bespoke, end-to-end CFRP solution designed specifically for RAAC, pairing hands-on survey, scanning and monitoring expertise with award-winning structural engineering.
Neil Smuts MCIOB · MInstNDT · President, UK Concrete Scanning Standard
Neil leads the survey, scanning and monitoring side of every Structured Carbon project, and is President of the UK Concrete Scanning Standard (UKCSS), the national standard for concrete scanning. A member of the Chartered Institute of Building (MCIOB) and the Institute of NDT (MInstNDT), and a Fellow of the Register of Concrete Scanning Professionals, he specialises in the non-destructive testing, concrete scanning and condition assessment of RAAC, providing the survey and monitoring data that underpins each remediation. Within our RAACSafe™ Protocol, Neil owns the Assess and Monitor stages, establishing the true condition of a structure before any work and confirming its performance afterward.
John Staves CEng FIStructE
John is a chartered structural engineer (CEng FIStructE) and one of the UK’s leading specialists in RAAC. He leads all of the structural calculations and the bespoke CFRP strengthening design for Structured Carbon. John received the Innovation Award at the HSBC Commercial Banking and Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) Small Business Growth Awards for his work on RAAC repair, recognising the engineering approach behind our solution. Within our RAACSafe™ Protocol, John owns the Design stage, turning the survey into a buildable, fully engineered strengthening scheme.
How we work together
Survey and engineering are usually two separate firms, and RAAC falls through the gap between them. Structured Carbon closes that gap. Neil’s assessment feeds directly into John’s design, the bespoke CFRP is manufactured to that design, and the same partnership sees it installed and monitored. That single, joined-up line is what makes our service genuinely end-to-end, and it is captured in our five-stage RAACSafe™ Protocol:
- Assess. Neil surveys, scans and assesses the RAAC and its condition.
- Design. John carries out the calculations and designs the bespoke CFRP scheme.
- Manufacture. The CFRP solution is produced bespoke to that design.
- Install. The system is applied in place, keeping the building in use where possible.
- Monitor. Ongoing monitoring confirms the strengthened structure performs as designed.
