RAAC in hospitals

RAAC in hospitals and NHS estates

RAAC is found in hospital sites across the country. Our register lists 61 hospital and NHS sites publicly identified as containing RAAC. For an NHS estates team the challenge is dealing with it without losing wards, theatres or clinical capacity.

  • Work planned around live clinical areas
  • Assessments signed by a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Structural Engineers.

RAAC inspections for hospitals

Hospitals are large and complex, so a full engineering inspection is priced per building once we know its size, access and the level of detail required. Scanning is non-destructive and can be planned around clinical activity, including evenings and weekends.

Strengthening without losing capacity

Where the assessment shows the planks can be kept, bespoke CFRP strengthens them in place, with the work phased around the hospital so wards and departments stay open. Across the RAAC tenders we cost, a bespoke CFRP scheme engineered for that exact roof frequently comes in at well below 15 per cent of the cost of full replacement. On one tender, a roof costed at around £40 million to replace was priced for strengthening at under £4 million.

Assessment and sign-off

Findings are assessed against the current IStructE RAAC guidance, with a risk category and a management and remediation strategy for each area. Every assessment is signed by a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Structural Engineers.

See our existing guide to RAAC strengthening for hospitals and the register of confirmed RAAC buildings, which lists publicly identified buildings, not buildings we have worked on.
